TBM Avenger
Introduced in 1941, the Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger became the U.S. Navy’s standard torpedo bomber throughout World War II.
The Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942 and first saw combat during the Battle of Midway. Despite the loss of five out of six aircraft on its debut mission, it continued in service and proved to be a powerful submarine hunter.
Highlights of its service include:
- Most widely-used torpedo bomber of World War II
- Helped sink the Japanese super-battleships Yamato and Musashi
- Credited with sinking 30 submarines
- Greatly modified post-war and remained in use until the 1960s
