B-29 “Doc” Superfortress
The Incredible Story of B-29 Doc
Built in Wichita and delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces in March 1945, B-29 Doc joined the fleet just months before the end of World War II. In the years that followed, Doc took on new roles—including radar calibration as part of a squadron known as the “Seven Dwarfs,” and later as a target-towing aircraft.
By 1956, Doc’s mission changed again. Along with the rest of its squadron, it became a ground target for military training at China Lake in the Mojave Desert. There, it sat for more than 40 years—weathered by time and forgotten by most.
That changed in 1987, when aviation enthusiast Tony Mazzolini discovered the plane and began the long journey to bring it back to life. After years of working through government red tape and rallying support, Tony and a group of volunteers finally removed Doc from the desert in 1998. The aircraft was transported back to Wichita in pieces in 2000—just a short distance from where it was originally built.
Restoration would take years and thousands of volunteer hours. In 2013, a nonprofit group called Doc’s Friends formed to see the project through. Thanks to their hard work and determination, Doc flew again on July 17, 2016, soaring back into the skies as a powerful symbol of American history and perseverance.
